Man accused of importing cocaine
$152,000 appeared in Magistrates' Court yesterday.
Aston Edwards, 42, of 76 Spice Hill Road, Warwick was represented by lawyer Victoria Pearman.
Ms Pearman successfully applied for a reduction in the sum of Edwards' bail.
She told the court Edwards was married to a Bermudian and had lived here for more than 20 years. She stressed that there was no chance of her client absconding.
Previously bail was set at $100,000 with two sureties of $50,000 each. After inquiring why bail was set so high, Magistrate Archibald Warner set the new terms for bail at $15,000 and two sureties of the said amount. However, the former conditions of reporting to the Hamilton Police Station three days a week remained in place.
Changing the bail conditions, Mr. Warner noted that the Court of Appeal had indicated in bail applications non-Bermudians should not be treated any differently than locals.
The matter was adjourned until August 20 for mention.
