Hamilton Parish go down fighting

St. George's sealed Hamilton Parish's relegation fate and boosted their own chances of First Division survival yesterday with two late second-half goals at Wellington Oval.

The introduction of William (Apples) Richardson at the start of the second half for full-back Delbert Minors proved a good move by coach Greg Foggo as Richardson laid on both goals, for Clay Smith in the 69th minute and Marlon Outerbridge five minutes from time.

Parish came into this match knowing that only a miracle would prevent them from returning to the Second Division, but they never played like a team accepting the inevitable -- even after some early St. George's pressure.

St. George's striker Duvall Smith wasted the best of the early chances when he missed a sitter in the 13th minute after being slow in getting off a shot in front of an empty goal.

Parish, with only two subs on the bench, suffered a setback in the 14th minute when midfielder Ashton Outerbridge limped off with a pulled hamstring to be replaced by Sinclair Gibbons.

Still the Peppers remained competitive as St. George's 'keeper Troy Hall had to dive to his right to cut out a cross from Irving Burgess before a breakaway by Antwon Darrell resulted in his shot just missing the far post.

Parish were creating the better of the chances midway through the first half after a slow start and were denied in the 24th minute when Darrell's header caught Hall off his line but the ball hit the crossbar.

St. George's, with Clay Smith returning from injury and Jan Cieters back from suspension to boost their midfield, had some encouraging raids but were kept out by a Parish defence marshalled by sweeper John Nicol.

Parish 'keeper George Fox dove to smother a shot from Cieters on the hour following a break on the left. Minutes later Fox blocked a point-blank shot from Outerbridge following a cross from Richardson whose arrival boosted the St. George's attack.

Clay Smith twice went close to breaking the deadlock as he put a shot wide of the near post in the 66th minute and then drove an effort past the far post moments later.

Smith got onto the end of a cross from the right by Richardson to drive a right-foot shot past Fox to give St. George's a deserved lead in the 69th minute. And just when Parish threatened to produced an equaliser, Richardson opened their defence again in the 85th minute with a pass to Outerbridge, which the midfielder hammered into the roof of the net.
