Bus riding Senator learning how to ride – on a roadracer

Thaao Dill and Paul DeCouto

He doesn't ride, he doesn't drive and his only means of getting around is either by bus, on foot or by taxi.

Radio personality Senator Thaao Dill has decided to take a chance and learn to ride a bike – not just any bike but a 600cc Motorcycle.

This comes after a lighthearted suggestion from Bermuda Motorcycle Racing Club (BMRC) Vice President Cyril Whitter.

Sen. Dill said he jokingly agreed with Mr. Whitter, but the issue was materialised by BMRC spokesman, Paul DeCouto.

He said: "I am really nervous at the thought of me getting on that bike – but Paul and Jamel [Hartman] agreed it would be a good idea.

"And although I have absolutely no experience on how to operate any motorised vehicular transportation, I decided to do it because I feel it's a great idea to promote this youth centred activity."

This Sunday, the senator will try his luck on the motorcycle at the masterclass which will be held at 2 p.m.

The initiative which is called 'Teaching Thaao How to Ride' is also the penultimate meet of the season, the last meet which will be held on October 19, will feature a Go-kart demonstration as it is already in its winter season.

Mr. DeCouto said: "We are going to get Thaao on the bike and get him safely on the track, show him the basics and see where we go from there.

"It will definitely be a good show for the audience.

"The idea of the whole initiative is to bring awareness to our organisation and to get people interested."

The senator, who feels that he is beyond teachable when it comes to learning these bikes, said he would be fully protected before he attempts to get on the bike.

Mr. DeCouto said that he thinks Sen. Dill is teachable.

"Learning to ride these bikes does have a learning curve, so the person has to be confident in their riding ability before they are able to do well and I think Thaao is totally teachable."

Sen. Dill said he is doubtful that he will ever participate in any racing competitions.

He said: "If possible, I will be fully wrapped in bubble wrap for protection."

Regardless of any of his apprehensions, Sen. Dill will be putting his best foot forward on Sunday in attempting this feat.

He encourages anyone that has ever considered this sport to try it.

He said: "If I am able to learn how to ride these bikes then trust me, anyone can do it – just come out this Sunday and have a good time with us."

A meeting highlighting this event and other objectives will be held tonight at 7 p.m. in the Bermuda Industrial Union building and the public is invited to attend.

Also appearing at the Sunday meet will be International Rider, Tim Marks.

Mr. Marks, a Canadian super moto bike rider, is known for his unique riding style. This type of motorcycle is a dirt bike converted into a street bike.
