Village chase a Charity Cup record

Last season North Village equalled PHC Zebras? record for the most consecutive Charity Cup wins (four).

On Saturday, the Reds can go one better and claim sole possession of the record with victory over city rivals Dandy Town at BAA Field.

Village outgunned Devonshire Cougars 4-3 at the same venue last year to lay claim to a fourth straight Charity Cup title, and first under new coach Dwayne (Streaker) Adams who went on to become the first local coach to win the Triple Crown in his rookie season.

The Reds won a seventh Premier Division championship, a seventh Friendship Trophy and a ninth overall FA Cup last season under Adams? watch.

But in order to win a fifth straight Charity Cup, Adams? depleted squad will have to overcome a Hornets team missing only two regulars through national team duty (Digicel Cup) in the Caribbean in what will be a repeat of the 2004-05 final the Reds won comfortably 2-0.

?We are aware of this fact and also that we have actually won it more times than any other club. But as far as consecutive times is concerned we are equal with PHC,? Village boss Shervin Dill told .

?So we know we are on the verge of setting another record, but that is not our main focus.?

Overall Village have won the most Charity Cup titles (six), while PHC have won four and Dandy Town and defunct Vasco da Gama three apiece.

Dill said winning the Charity Cup provides the victorious team with a solid foundation to build upon.

?It gives teams a good start to the season by winning the first cup,? he added. ?It?s an incentive for us to try and win as many titles as possible and so its always good t o have a good start.

?We can?t forecast the result and we do have a lot of respect for Dandy Town. Our intention is certainly to defend the cup, but we can?t sit on the laurels of last year?s success. So basically we will have to start all over again and put in the required effort.

?Pre-season has been going relatively well, and we have the best intentions for another successful season.?

Proceeds from this Saturday?s match will go towards medical costs for former Zebras great Marischal (Mop) Astwood and Boulevard players Troy Smith and Vernon Symonds, according to Bermuda Football Association (BFA).

?North Village Community Club (NVCC) totally supports this decision and it?s nice to see consideration being given to players who have made a contribution over the years to the game,? Dill said.

Four-time defending champs Village and Town lock horns immediately following Saturday?s opening Women?s Charity Cup clash involving Lady Cougars and Lady Rams.

The BFA are holding their Annual General Meeting tonight at Social Club at 6.30 p.m. All members are urged to attend.
