Their Sea Knight helicopter plunged into the waves during a training flight.

Four crewmen were aboard when the accident happened about 500 miles east-northeast of the Island yesterday afternoon, said Chief Petty Officer Scott Mohr, a navy spokesman in Norfolk, Virginia.

One survivor was rescued after the crash, but the navy did not have details of his condition. The names of the crewmen were being withheld until relatives could be notified.

The helicopter was based on the amphibious assault ship USS Inchon , which left its home port in Norfolk last week en route to the Mediterranean.

The crew were part of Helicopter Support Squadron Six, detachment one, based at Norfolk Naval Air Station.

The cause of the accident was under investigation, Mohr said.
