The announcement last night by Police Commissioner Mr. Lennett Edwards ends a two-year stretch in which the post was occupied by various candidates for the number three rank in the Police Force.

Mr. Edwards said Mr. Perinchief will continue to head the Criminal Investigations Department where he has been acting Assistant Commissioner for the past 18 months.

Mr. Perinchief was a candidate for assistant commissioner with four other Police superintendents: Alan Bissell, Campbell Simons, George Rose and Andrew Bermingham.

A born Bermudian who has served on the Force since 1964, Mr. Perinchief has spent 15 years working in the Police Criminal Investigations Department.

During the course of his career he has received five Commissioner's Commendations for his outstanding ability as a detective and supervisor of investigative teams.

Other honours include the Colonial Police Long Service Medal and Colonial Police Medal for Meritorious Service. In 1991 he was named on the Queen's New Years Honour list.

Mr. Perinchief received his training at the Metropolitan Police Academy in the United Kingdom, the Ontario Police College in Canada and the FBI National Academy in the United States where he graduated in 1984.

In his own time, he obtained degrees in psychology from Queen's University in Canada and a Masters Degree in Management and Human Resource Development from Webster University in the United States.

Mr. Perinchief was particularly well known for his work with the Police Cycle Squad and introduced the first Police Cycle Gymkhana. He is married with three children.
