Jekyll heroics keep Hood alive

after extra-time The only real excitement of this undistinguished first round FA Cup tie came after 87 minutes when goalkeeper Andrew Jekyll pulled off a dramatic save to deny substitute Mackie Crane the winning goal.

With extra-time staring both teams in the face, Crane looked as though he was about to settle the issue when he fired in a rocket from 14 yards out.

But Jekyll rose to the challenge, palming the ball onto the bar before watching it being cleared.

At the end of what, for the most part, was a scrappy affair, neither team could complain about a replay. Both teams were clearly inept when going forward and lacking in imgination when reaching the penalty box.

With the attacks continually breaking down, chances were few and far between.

St.George's held an edge in the first half with Kenny Butterfield and Greg Foggo putting shots wide and directly at Jekyll in the first 28 minutes.

Hood got into the act for the first time after 30 minutes when Simon Turner fired an angled shot from 15 yards inches wide of the post.

Neither team established a clear edge when play resumed after the interval but St. George's hinted that they might score first with Foggo prominent during bursts down the left flank.

Hood showed signs of tiring but their opponents just didn't have the ability to cash in, especially with centrebacks Colin McQueen and Gary Ray giving little away.

During an isolated attack after 81 minutes Hood had a good chance to score but Jarlath McCabe sent his volley just over the bar.

St. George's responded with Dean Bailey firing a 16-yarder over the bar after 86 minutes and Crane testing Jekyll with the vicious shot that should have settled it.

S.Eagles 5 Prison Officers 0 Commercial League side Prison Officers were lucky to come away with merely a five-goal thrashing.

The First Division Eagles scored two goals in the first half and three in the second, but could have put the game well out of reach with at least seven goals before the interval.

They had five clear scoring chances before the opening goal came from Stevie Burrows after 29 minutes, but poor finishing let Officers off the hook.

Burrows made it 2-0 after 36 minutes and Eagles stretched their lead to 3-0 through Eddie Callender after 61 minutes.

Darren Dowling made it 4-0 after 78 minutes and Jerome Greenwood scored the last five minutes from time.

Officers had their backs against the wall after 58 minutes when Aaron Adams was sent off by referee Ralph Tumbridge.

Dandy Stars 6 Prospect 1 Dandy Stars moved into the next round of the Women's Konica Cup with a 6-1 thrashing of Prospect at St. John's Field yesterday.

Four goals from Stacey Smith and two from Mia Burgess afforded Stars an easy passage.

Smith tallied three times in the first half, scoring in the 15th, 27th and 42nd minutes, and returned to notch another in the 53rd minute. Burgess then took over, finding the target in the 68th and 71st minutes.

Arkeita Smith registered a consolation goal for Prospect in the 65th minute.
