Bermuda, we must invest in ourselves

May 22, 2013Dear Sir,Have we become a complacent society that has lost trust (if ever had it) in the ability of ourselves? Or, is it that we are okay with mediocrity and therefore truly value the wrong things? Whatever the case, we have a chance to improve as long as we have life, but inspiring each other to want and to do better is the challenge. When the sons of our family friends and neighbours were being brutally murdered there was visible anger. When people felt the government was doing more harm to the people than good for the country, again, more visible anger. When people were losing jobs on a weekly basis with nowhere to turn and companies along with expats were leaving in large numbers we started to feel the pain, again, there was visible anger. What have we learned from such anger? Throughout these hard times that we face as a country, have we learned anything? Other than a change in government, have we started to make different decisions or are we too afraid or comfortable to do what might be in our best interest? Have we realised that no matter who we elect as a government, that we the people are in fact the ones who govern the country? With companies and jobs leaving have we not been inspired enough to work with friends family and others to create opportunities for ourselves?Bermuda, I received a piece of advice years ago from a good friend. The best investment one can make is in oneself. We must invest in ourselves. We must value ourselves. If we as Bermudians want to be taken seriously then we must give ourselves the best chance to succeed. This begins with love for our fellow people, trust, and respect. We deserve better, now let’s do better. Happy Bermuda Day 2013.JAMEL HARDTMAN
