Dilley’s death leaves MCC spinner devastated

MCC spin bowler Michael Baer said he was ‘devastated’ by the news of Graham Dilley’s death. The former England fast bowler died yesterday at the age of 52 following a short illness and the MCC team were told yesterday morning before they travelled to the National Sports Centre to take on Bermuda in two Twenty20 matches. There was a moments silence before the first game as the two teams remembered a man who Baer called ‘one of the all time greats’.Dilley, who ran the MCC Academy at Loughbrough University, coached Baer when he was a student there and the two became close when Baer went on to captain the university side in his third year.“I was pretty gutted when I heard to be honest,” said Baer, “he (Dilley) helped me massively with my cricket and I captained the side in my third year. I had a pretty close relationship with him.“He was just a great bloke, always happy to help with any issues whether they were cricket related or not, he’s always there for you just a phone call away. I was pretty devastated to be honest.”Like the rest of the MCC team Baer has his own memories of Dilley and spent yesterday morning sharing them with friends and former team-mates who were equally affected by their former coach’s death.“I spoken to a few friends who I went to university with, and read the tributes on Facebook and Twitter and that sort of thing, everyone’s just full of praise for him,” Baer said. “The first time I met him was when I went to university and obviously he was a legend of the game, you heard all these stories about him, the fastest white man on earth, all these sorts of things.“In a period of great fast bowling, he was one of the all time greats, and if it hadn’t been for the injuries he could have been one of the very best.”
