Italian terracotta sculptures and marvellous bronze pieces available from

At Europa Gardens, one can find handcrafted ornamented pottery from the village of Impruneta, in the Tuscany region of Italy.

The selection is wide, with everything from Roman columns and statues to garden fountains, bird baths, and planters to patio table, lamp pillars and ballustruding.

"You can find anything here for something like a small patio to a large hotel garden,'' says owner Mrs. Judy Canale.

The terracotta products are handmade, not moulded, therfore making each piece unique. The bronze products are made from an epoxy, marble and concrete mixture, which is then coated with bronze, to ensure their durability. Many of the bronze statuary is covered with a green patina-like covering with is frozen after the bronze coating is applied, to give it that antique look.

One sculpture which sold very quickly was a bronze wild boar, not dissimilar to the original "Bermudian'', the wild hog! "We have brought in about 150 different items,'' Mrs. Canale said, "so that people can get an idea of the kinds of things for sale. The the terra cotta items come in two finishes: shiny and dull.'' One of the most interesting pieces on display is a terra cotta vase, covered by a glass table top, inlaid with marble.

"It's affordable for just about anybody, and you'll be able to find anything from $25 to $5,000,'' Mrs. Canale said.

The inspiration for Europa Gardens and Imports came from the days when Mrs.

Canale's husband Florindo worked at La Trattoria.

"At one time La Trattoria had an Italian garden as part of the restaurant, and they decorated it with Italian statuary,'' she said. "When they closed the garden down, that stuff went like hotcakes. Many of the clients that he used to have at the restaurant asked about him bringing in that kind of things from Italy, and recently he thought that the time was right. The response has been great.'' Europa Gardens is located at 52 Middle Road, next to the Spicelands Riding Centre. The Canales will also have a booth at the Agricultural Exhibition this week.
