A host of the Island’s young people were honoured on the weekend as part of Teen Service’s Outstanding Teen Awards.

Warwick Academy student Lindsay Fisher took home the grand prize, winning the 2014 Overall Outstanding Teen Award, but she was just one of more than 100 students celebrated at the annual event.

A total of 113 students had been nominated for an award, with 20 teens winning awards in the various categories.

Bermuda Institute’s Tatiana King and Warwick Academy’s Zachary Friesen won the award for Spiritual Leadership, while Berkeley student Jasmyn Renfroe and Jaquan Hatherly of Cedarbridge won in the Sports category.

Mount Saint Agnes student Amber Reid and Ryan Robinson-Perinchief from Berkeley won the Leadership prize, and Cedarbridge’s Tahirah Smith and Saltus’ Bruce Sandham won the award for Most Progress.

In the Community Service category Gabriella Arnold, from Warwick Academy, and Kjeld-Mizpah Conyers Steede, from Cedarbridge, took home the top honours, while Warwick Academy student Samuel Bennett won the Vocational Technical/Arts prize.

Saltus student Kayla Simmons and Jair Duke from Cedarbridge won the award for Perseverance, and Bermuda High School’s Wendy Tuxworth and Warwick Academy’s Russell Conyers were honoured for Academic Achievement.

Jasmine Lee from Warwick Academy and Brandon Sousa from Mount Saint Agnes received the Visual Art prize, while Christia Wright from the Bermuda Institute and Benjamin Dylan from Warwick Academy won the Performing Arts category.

Education Minister Grant Gibbons praised the winners and nominees, saying: “What an amazing group, so full of enthusiasm, energy, creativity and commitment, and this year there are a record number of high achievers, 113 in all. You have made your families, your teachers and your schools proud, and your collective talent will undoubtedly benefit Bermuda in the years to come.

“Each Outstanding Teen Award nominee, in his or her own unique way, is already making Bermuda a better place. We are impressed with your high academic achievement, your devotion to community service, and your commitment to music, art and sport.

“You have already understood the important connection between effort and reward, and that will serve you well in anything you choose to do in the future. Continue to set the bar high and you will go far. Please accept my congratulations for a job very well done and my best wishes for continued personal success.”

Shadow Minister of Community Affairs Michael Weeks said attending the awards ceremony was always a highlight of his year.

“Watching 113 young people from all of the Island’s senior schools receive certificates of achievement and watching the category award winners be recognised in front of family and friends is beautiful,” he said. “We have so many young people doing great things.”

Shadow Minister of Education, Walton Brown added: “Too often we are drawn into conversation over what is wrong with our youth, but there are so many that are on the path to success. Year after year, these awards make us all aware of this fact.”
