Southampton survive after early scare
Key West Rangers started fast but faded just as quickly as Southampton Rangers rolled to victory in this FA Cup first round tie at St. John's Field much more easily than the score would indicate.
Pre-game banter had revolved around the possibility of an upset, with Commercial League side Key West possessing several players with recent top flight experience, and Southampton the Premier Division basement dwellers.
And such prognosticators could be seen patting themselves on the back barely two minutes into the contest as ageless wonder Oscar Samuels spurred the home side into the lead.
A long ball forward by centre-back Berwin Thomas caused Southampton full-back Jason Raynor problems, his hesitation in controlling allowing 50-year-old Samuels to steal possession before unloading an angled volley that caught goalkeeper Randy Darrell completely unawares.
Minutes later Southampton's back four were again at a loss as Ricky Mallory sprinted unchallenged down the left flank only to plant his left foot effort wide of the mark.
Incurring the ire of the coaching staff, the visitors finally came to life, with Raynor attempting to repair his damage with a thunderous 25-yard blast that sailed a foot wide right.
Striker Shawn Simons levelled matters in the 10th minute, taking advantage of a failed clearance by Key West, nipping in behind his marker and planting a left-foot shot past Zane DeSilva from in close.
Sergio Griffin responded in having his goal-bound effort deflected for a corner, but this would be the end of Key West's challenge as Southampton moved from strength to strength.
Craig Darrell scored what proved to be the winning tally in the 15th minute, converting a free kick from the edge of the penalty area after midfielder Omari Hart was brought down.
Southampton reigned supreme for the remainder of the half, and indeed the match, showering Key West's defence with pressure, although the scoresheet failed to indicate such.
Key West's veterans began to suffer towards the end with several players hobbling through injury, age, and just plain lack of fitness.
Lobster Pot 4 Fire Service 2 (after extra-time) Two goals each from Troy Berkeley and Saleem Mukiddem put Lobster Pot through to the second round of the FA Cup.
But they needed 30 minutes of extra-time to finish off the job after Denon McGowan had grabbed a last-gasp equaliser for Fire Service to leave the scores tied at 2-2 after 90 minutes.
It was Fire Service who drew first blood in this battle of the Commercial League First Division high fliers, with a fifth-minute strike by Randy Boyles.
Lobster Pot battled their way back into the game and deserved their equaliser which arrived early in the second half when a long ball caught the Fire Service defence napping and Mukiddem was left with space to drill into the bottom left-hand corner from 10 yards.
Around 15 minutes from time, Lobster Pot took the lead when Berkeley slipped his marker in the centre circle to earn himself a clear run at goal and kept his head one-on-one with the goalkeeper to steer home a side-footed finish.
Two minutes later, the unmarked Berkeley smashed wide from 12 yards and Pot were to regret the miss.
The firemen piled on the pressure in the last 10 minutes but were denied three times by excellent saves from Pot goalkeeper Brian Ward.
But it was Ward's uncharacteristic gaffe which sent the game into extra-time.
Fire Service won a free kick near the right-hand touchline, McGowan chipped the ball speculatively to the far post and Ward misjudged it and could only get his fingers to the ball as it drifted into the net.
Pot regrouped and 11 minutes into the first extra period they were back in front, when a poor clearance fell to Mukiddem who cracked in a low left-footed shot from 18 yards.
Fire Service missed two good chances before Berkeley rounded off the scoring for Pot with a superb clincher. Fed the ball just inside the penalty area, Berkeley jinked left past one defender, right past another and calmly rolled an accurate shot into the net.
Danger man: Lobster Pot striker Troy Berkeley slips past a Fire Service tackle in Pot's 4-2 win yesterday. Berkeley scored twice.
