Roller-coaster ride of sheer hilarity

Uzimon is seen here in meditation, as he steadies himself for his uzi lyrics.

The star of the roots rock reggae dancehall musical 'The UZICAL' had everyone at the Galapagos Art Space in Brooklyn in peals of laughter.

The audience, which was made up of both Bermudians and New Yorkers, couldn't help but be drawn into the unknown with Bermuda's own Daniel Frith, aka UZIMON.

It was a musical like you have never seen before and the production has the makings of a new movement for artists who want to perform their tunes and narrate a tale.

UZIMON, the compassionate gunman and his band of freedom fighting musicians and fugitives from the law, took over a full house at the Galapagos Art Space on Friday.

The premise behind the play was that six months ago UZIMON was reportedly 'shot dead' on a New York City street. His remains were flown to Bermuda where he miraculously 'rose again' during the Fright Night Halloween festivities at Fort Hamilton.

Having a new lease on life, as it were, UZIMON and his band returned to the US where the spoof continued.

And although he was resurrected, his life was once again in peril, as swarms of trigger-happy federal agents closed in. The question was, would that performance be their last? And if so, would UZIMON ensure that his legacy is left behind, even as he faces the truth about his past?

At the start, he warned the audience that the Feds, the CIA, and even the KGB were outside with guns trained, as they were after him because of his reggaelution (Reggae Evolution).

But it turned into a tale of his life, abandonment by his parents and being raised in isolation by the Jamaican housekeeper and a character only known as uncle Dexter in Jamaica.

Throughout 'The UZICAL', he skilfully acted out the voices of all the characters in native Jamaican tones. From there he took the audience on a rollercoaster ride of sheer hilarity, as his character went into reggae star overdrive.

The music skilfully ranged from old reggae to soundtracks from the 'Coming to America' theme song to that of 'Star Wars Return of the Jedi' when Luke Skywalker finds out that Darth Vader is his father.

Some of his original music saw him sing songs such as 'Steven Seagal', 'UZI-Morning', 'Gun, Gun, Gun' and a host of others that are from his current album 'UZIMON: The Compassionate Gun Man'.

The entire musical was a laugh a minute and one can only hope that Volcanic's Jon Legere, who produces UZIMON, brings 'The UZICAL' to Bermuda for everyone to enjoy.
