Butcher shows his class

entertaining cricket fans in the absence of former West Indies skipper Richie Richardson during Saturday's sixth annual testimonial at Lord's.

The former England and Middlesex batsman, who hasn't played professionally in more than six years, displayed a variety of shots while representing both batting sides in the 40 overs game which saw Gladston (Sad) Brown's team beating Eugene Woods' squad by three wickets. Woods' XI scored 164-9 and Brown's XI 172-7.

Butcher stroked 35 for Brown's XI, following up his early innings of 17 for Wood's select.

St. Clair (Brinky) Tucker, the spokesman for the Testimonial Committee, said that it was pleasing to see the Barbados-born Butcher, the lone guest player after Richardson's late withdrawal, perform at an unusually high standard for somebody who had been away from the game for an extended period.

"He executed some first class strokes while batting for both teams. I am certain he has the ability and technique to pass on many tips to the current players, particularly those representing Bermuda in the Red Stripe Bowl next month,'' said Tucker.

Tucker added that the non-appearance of Richardson may have had a slight affect on the attendance.

"It was a glorious day for everybody and the committee would like to thank all of whose who turned up and offer special thanks to the many corporate sponsors,'' added Tucker.

Batting first, Wood's team got solid batting help from Oliver Pitcher who retired with 71 while Lee Raynor scored 29, Butcher 17, Woods 15 not out and George Rock 13. Spinner Eldon Raynor led Brown's bowling with six for 25 off eight overs.

Gerald Bean was the top bat for Brown's team with 43 while Butcher followed with 35, Dennis Wainwright 16, Elliott Pitcher 15, Stephen West 15 and Arthur Pitcher 14 not out.

Spinner Raymond (Jackie) Durham led the Wood's bowlers with four for 27 off 7.3 overs with two maidens.
