North Village will fly the flag for Bermuda at the CFU Club Championships in the Cayman Islands next weekend.Village, who earned the right to play in the tournament by winning last season’s Premier Division, will play first round Group One games against Georgetown Sports Club and Elite Sports Club at the TE McField Playing Field. The winner of the group will advance to the next stage where they will meet Puerto Rico Islanders and Trinidad’s Caledonia and Elite Sports Club. The best runner-up from Groups One, Two and Three will also progress the second round.Shaun Goater, Village’s coach, has backed his players to do the Island proud in the region’s premier club tournament.“We are extremely excited that North Village have been afforded this opportunity to compete in the CFU Club Championships in the Cayman Islands,” said Goater, whose side leave the Island next Friday.“This will be of high quality football and therefore this will not be taken for granted by North Village. During the past month, we have raised the bar in our training sessions for this tournament. The coaching staff and players continue to work closely as we prepare for this most important tournament. Meanwhile, the response from the players has been overwhelmingly positive as we do our final preparations.”Bermuda Football Association’s chairman of the player development committee, Mark Wade, believes it’s important for the Island’s domestic champions to be afforded the opportunity to play in the CFU Championships.“The participation of North Village Community Club in the CFU Club Championship is a continuation of the efforts to give players and clubs exposure to higher levels of competition,” Wade said.“This exposure should have the net effect of raising the level of play domestically and increasing the pool of players capable of vying for places in the national team.“The player development committee is excited of the prospects of a team from Bermuda doing well in the competition.”Village, who celebrated their 55th anniversary this year, are the third club to represent Bermuda in the Caribbean in recent years after Dandy Town and Devonshire Cougars.Rams take on Georgetown Sports Club on March 25 and Elite Sports Club on March 28.
