Riders seriously hurt in spate of accidents

Two motorcyclists were rushed to intensive care with critical injuries after serious road crashes at the weekend.

Police reported four nasty accidents in the space of just two days — three of them involving only one vehicle.

The worst injuries were sustained by a 25-year-old Australian man who lost control of his motorcycle and hit a wall on South Road in Paget just before midnight on Saturday.

The rider, of Warwick, suffered head injuries and was taken to the intensive care unit at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, where he remained last night in a stable condition.

The crash happened close to the junction with Southcote Road as the motorcyclist was travelling west near Coral Beach. Police are asking witnesses to call P.c. Francilla Henry on 295-0011.

The previous evening, at about 7.45 p.m, a 19-year-old motorcyclist lost control of his bike and hit a sidewalk, then a road sign, while travelling west on Parsons Road in Pembroke.

The teenager, from Pembroke, was taken to intensive care at KEMH for treatment of suspected broken ribs and possible internal injuries. He had been moved to a general ward by yesterday, when his condition was also stable.

Anyone who saw the crash should call P.c. Rawle Massiah on the number above.

Also on Friday, shortly before midnight, a motorcyclist lost control of his bike heading east on the Causeway. The 53-year-old St. George's man collided with a wall, suffering head injuries and an injured left leg.

He was rushed to KEMH in an ambulance and his condition on a general ward was stable last night. Witnesses are asked to call P.c. Michael Butcher on 293-2222.

Details remain sketchy about the fourth crash, which saw a 27-year-old motorcyclist end up at KEMH with a broken left leg and injured hand.

A Police spokesman said officers attended the accident on South Road in Warwick, near the junction with Dunscombe Road, at about 4 a.m. on Saturday.

"Details about how the collision occurred are unclear," he said. "On arrival, officers observed a motorcycle laying in the road and EMTs (emergency medical technicians) assisting the victim."

He added: "The motorcycle was extensively damaged. It is believed there may have been another vehicle involved."

The rider, from Warwick, was yesterday stable on a general ward. Anyone with information about what happened is asked to call P.c. Cletus Cyris on 295-0011.

The Police spokesman said the four collisions represented the most serious of the road crashes that happened over the weekend.

He added: "The Bermuda Police Service continues to urge the motoring public to drive and ride responsibly on the Island's roads.

"During the hours of darkness all road users should be more vigilant, especially motorcycle riders. Being aware of your surroundings and obeying the rules of the road are two simple ways to help make Bermuda's roads safer."
