BEST seeks help in Southlands clean-up

BEST is asking for residents’ help in a three-day clean-up of Southlands next week. The clean-up, which starts Monday, is being organised by the Bermuda Environmental Sustainability Taskforce and the Department of Conservation Services in the lead-up to the Warwick property officially becoming a national park.Susan Amos-Quinn of BEST said: “We are hoping to encourage as many businesses as possible to send out their staff on the ‘spruce-up’ days to help us restore the property. We are also inviting landscaping companies to donate equipment and their workers’ time to help.“This is such an amazing piece of land that can be a true treasure for Bermuda and we are hoping that as many people as possible help in any way they can in order to make this area something to be proud of for generations to come.”The clean-up will lead to an open house next Saturday, with tours by former Government Conservation Officer David Wingate and a bonfire/beach party at Southlands beach at 4pm with live entertainment.Stands will also be set up around the main house to showcase various organisations’ work. The South Shore property was earmarked for hotel development until public outcry convinced Government to agree to a land swap. The clean-up will take place between 8am and 5pm on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Volunteers should e-mail office@best.org.bm or 292-3782.
