?We?re ready for the Reggae Boyz?
Kyle Lightbourne has been forced to make three changes to tonight?s starting XI that will lock horns with Jamaica?s Under 23 national team at the National Sports Centre (NSC).
Hamilton Parish ?keeper Nigel Burgess and Alexander Logan have both returned to studies in the US, while diminutive midfielder Damon Ming returned to the UK last Sunday night to rejoin his team-mates at Aylesbury United.
Taurean Manders, another overseas-based player who came off the bench against the New England Revolution last Saturday night at the NSC, has also returned to studies abroad.
These omissions have left coach Lightbourne with no other alternative but to fill the voids with players he feels most suitable or capable of completing the task at hand.
But the overall objective, he stressed, remains the same.
?Obviously we want to get a victory under our belts and hopefully we can put on a good show and play with more tempo,? said Lightbourne.
?That?s one of our main goals for this match and hopefully we can be solid on set pieces and not give sloppy goals away.?
Lightbourne would also like to see his strikers hit the target for the first time since New England?s first tour of the Island last February.
?Obviously we would love to score,? he said. ?Again I think it?s important we try and score first to lift the team?s confidence. And I?m really looking to the test because we are playing against a country we are expected to compete against and do well, even though Jamaica are higher than us in the world (FIFA) rankings.?
Somerset Trojans? ?keeper Timmy Figureido is expected to replace Burgess, Domico Coddington is heavily tipped to plug the gap left by Ming in midfield while Trojans? striker Stephen Astwood returns to the squad from injury.
At the rear, PHC Zebras? skipper Blenn Bean is expected to be called upon to fill the void left by young Alexander ? one of several youngsters the coach has pinned his future hopes upon.
Lightbourne confirmed that Philadelphia KiXX striker John Barry Nusum will be back for tonight?s clash, while North Village midfield maestro Jemeiko Jennings could see action against the visiting Reggea Boyz
Jennings, who has been sidelined for most of the season through injury, impressed during Tuesday night?s practice session at the NSC. However, coach Lightbourne doesn?t want to risk the player?s health by racing him back into the team.
?He looked sharp but we have to handle his situation with care because we don?t want to throw him out to the wolves,? he said. ?So there?s a possibility Jemieko could come off the bench.?
Zebras? stalwart Stanton Lewis is out through a hamstring injury while two other players Lightbourne could include on the team roster are Clevon (Crucial) Hill, Jared Peniston or Ireland Rangers? Shakir Smith.
Hill scored Bermuda?s equaliser against Jamaica?s Under 23 squad at the NSC three years ago.
Lightbourne will not divulge his starting XI until just prior to tonight?s kick off.
The former Coventry City striker expects the Jamaicans ? seeking to avenge a 2-1 defeat against a Gary Darrell -led Bermuda national team in 2003 ? to adopt a more aggressive approach and come out with a point to prove.
?I expect them to be strong and quick,? Lightbourne said. ?These guys have been coached by some very good international coaches and so I expect them to be strong and aggressive and not afraid to tackle.
?I also think they will be looking to pass the ball around and so we will have to deny them that right and look to challenge for everything.?
Bermuda lost 3-0 against the Revs at the Sports Centre last Saturday night in their first international assignment in eight months.
