Boyle triumphs in U-10 battle

Coral Beach Club’s junior tennis tournament ended just before Christmas with 57 players taking part, the boys’ 10 and under age group attracting the largest field of 15.

Courtland Boyle came out on top, winning a hard-fought battle over Andrew Forgesson 4-0, 3-5, 5-3 in the final.

In the girls’ 10 and under, Clementine Keyes held off Lindsay Fisher to win 4-1, 4-2.

In the girls’ 12 and under, Tyler Smith defeated Keyes in the semi-final 6-3, 6-4 before clinching the title with victory over Ciara Svenson 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 in the final.

Ten-year-old Smith made it through to two finals, winning the semis of the girls’ 14 and under against Courtney Fisher 6-3, 6-4, before going down to top seed Catherine Cooke 6-1, 6-2, in the final.

Cooke also lifted the 16 and under title which was played under a round-robin format. Her most impressive victory came when she upset Cayla Cross 6-4, 7-6 in a match of several long rallies in which Cooke took the second set in a close tiebreak.

Cross, however, was able to regroup and win the girls’ 18 crown but had to play well to defeat a determined Kaliane Marshall who extended her opponent to 3-6, 7-6, 6-3.

Jack Keyes claimed the under-12 boys’ title with a win over Thomas Moniz 6-1, 6-1 while in the boys’ 14 division, Alexander Cooper defeated Matteo Frazzoni 6-2, 5-7, 6-2.

Frazzoni had beaten Frederick Wade 6-4, 7-6 in semi-finals before losing to Kevin Caza in the final of the boys’ 16 and under, 3-6, 7-5, 6-0.

In boys’ 18 and under division, David Thomas again proved why he’s among the top juniors on the Island, easily winning that crown. He also paired with Naim Azhar to defeat Kevin Caza and Drew Burnett-Herkes 6-1, 6-1 in the doubles.

The boys’ 14 doubles final saw Oliver Lewis and Christopher Cooper defeat Connor Anderson and Courtland Boyle 6-1, 6-3 and in the girls’ 14 doubles, Courtney Fisher and Jessica Burns beat Harriet Woodward and Lindsay Fisher 6-3, 6-2.
