The art of public speaking, by Nell

VETERAN Bermudian broadcaster Nell Bassett is bringing her acclaimed public speaking lessons back home ? offering local corporate and political Eliza Doolittles the opportunity to learn from the distaff Henry Higgins.

Ms Bassett, the host of ZBM TV's in the 1960s, later moved to the US and was a radio personality on several New York stations, including WNEW-FM and at NBC, where she was national director of public affairs for a decade.

"While she was in the US, she also coached politicians and company executives in the art of public speaking," said a spokesman for Ms Bassett. "Now she feels that her talents in this area are necessary in Bermuda."

While living in the US some of Ms Bassett's clients included senior members of the New York banking community, the Wella Corporation and the New Jersey Transit Authority.

"There are no bad speaking voices," Ms Bassett said, "just bad speakers. When making a presentation or speech you want to be heard by everyone at the venue in a clear, concise and coherent manner. Don't let your colleagues down by making a less than perfect presentation."

Ms Bassett returned to Bermuda in 2001 and can currently be heard on VSB 1450AM Gold. She also regularly provides voice-overs for TV and radio commercials.
