Symons? monster tuna the catch of the day

Skipper Brian Mello in his boat, , was the big winner as the popular Bacardi Angling Tournament took place on Sunday ? for the first time in three years without a weather postponement.

Mello made the most of the fine conditions to take both overall and Class B honours, claiming the High Point Boat award with a total of 221.9 points.

But the skipper owed everything to angler Sean Symons who was responsible for the boat?s entire catch which included a 120-lb yellowfin tuna.

Symons, who took some two hours to land the tuna, came away with the high point angler prize.

A total of 60 boats with 259 anglers ventured out for the tournament, which has proved the most popular in Bermuda for more than 30 years.

Early weather conditions were favourable but by mid afternoon the seas got rougher as a few showers blew through. South west of Argus Banks appeared to be the favourite hunting ground.

Combined overall weight for the day was 2,566 lbs, some 450 lbs less than a year ago.

Last year?s major winner, again featured among the winners with Niki Sherlock claiming the High Point Female award for the second consecutive year., skippered by Larry Martin won the Class A High Point award while with captain Sinclair Lambe took the honours in Class C.
