Chamber hosts US tax sessions

Tax law changes affecting US citizens in Bermuda will be the topic of an information session next Monday, February 15, hosted by the Bermuda Chamber of Commerce.

And the following week, on Tuesday, February 23, the Chamber will host a second meeting on US immigration law, which will show how people can end up being US citizens without realising it.

James Paul Sabo, US tax specialist and president of ETS Ltd., will speak at both meetings. The Royal Gazette columnist will be joined by US immigration specialist Stephen Trow, of Trow & Rahal, for the second meeting.

Both meetings will take place in the Chamber of Commerce boardroom at 1 Point Pleasant Road and will run from 12 p.m. to 1.30 p.m.

Next Monday's meeting will focus on tax law changes for 2009 and 2010, discussion of key rules, the tax surcharge to pay for pending health care reform, the excise tax to be imposed on people with health care insurance and foreign earned income tax exclusion.

The February 23 event will focus on the immigration law, including births abroad to a US citizen parent, presumption of intent to retain American citizenship, derivative naturalisation and how to acquire US Green Card (permanent resident) status.

Related tax issues that will also feature include relinquishing your US citizenship or Green Card status and the US exit tax.

The Chamber's information sessions are free to all members.
