'The Great Debaters' shows how to overcome obstacles
The film 'The Great Debaters' is about a man named Professor Melvin Tolson, who is a brilliant debate team coach and coached students from a small college named Wiley College into a powerful debate team.
The team challenged many debate teams in the South and defeated all of them but one ¿ because the youngest boy on the debate team wasn't ready to be at the mike. The debate team couldn't compete against all the debate teams because they were black and the white debate teams didn't want them near them.
Since the debate team defeated most of the debate teams that wanted to compete against them, they received a groundbreaking invitation to debate Harvard University's championship team. At Harvard University, the debate team gave their all and defeated Harvard University's debate team with pride.
While I enjoyed the movie 'The Great Debaters', I really didn't like the scene in which white men hanged a black man and attacked the debate team. The men had no right to hang the man even if he had committed a crime. The men could have sent him to jail but instead they killed him because he was a black man.
If the boy from the debate team would have attacked the white men, I would have been proud because the men shouldn't hang people because they are a different race from them. I also didn't like when the white men attacked the debate team because they were black. That shows how bad discrimination was at the time before Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
I really liked the scene when the debate coach was teaching a class with the debate team in it because a member of the debate team showed that he was a smart black man that wanted to make something of himself. I think the scene showed that black men can stand out in the world.
I also liked that the teacher smiled at the boy to let him know he had done something excellent. When the teacher met with the boy after class, I was glad because the teacher wanted the boy to come to his debate session and use his talent. The boy agreed to go and I am very proud of him.
I really enjoyed the scene when the debate team debated against Harvard University's debate team. Both of the debate teams showed how knowledgeable they were and I am happy they took the debate seriously because the world needs young men to show their talents. I was amazed when I saw how the debaters emphasised their words and used their body actions to make their speech stand out. I was also shocked when the boy from the Wiley College debate team used one of his experiences to get to the point of his speech and really touched his teammate's heart.
'The Great Debaters' is a wonderful film and really showed how people fight for their rights, even when there are lots of obstacles.
