Detectives probing the murder of Marcus Gibbings have arrested a suspect, Police have confirmed.

Few details were released about the first arrest in the high-profile homicide case, which was announced in a press release.

A spokesman declined to confirm the suspect’s gender, age, the area where they live, or what offence they had been held on suspicion of — details normally released to the media when an arrest is made.

The spokesman could not confirm whether the suspect was still in custody yesterday because the investigation was ongoing.

Trinidadian Mr. Gibbings, 32, was found stabbed to death at a Devonshire apartment on October 26.

His family have criticised the Police handling of the case, branding the conduct of the murder investigation “unsatisfactory”. They have also urged the Trinidad and Tobago government to press for action.

Friday’s Police statement, confirming the arrest, said: “Police currently have a suspect in custody that is assisting with the investigation and the events leading up to the discovery of Marcus Gibbons.”

It added that 14 detectives were currently working on the case under the command of Acting Inspectors Terry Maxwell and Robert Cardwell.

The statement said the inquiry “continues to progress” and that a number of statements had been taken and a number of warrants executed.

“The use of the latest investigative technology and a forensic strategy has been employed and those results once received are anticipated to progress the investigation further,” it continued.

Police also thanked the public for their support and help, “particularly the various businesses in the private sector”.

Anyone with information about the murder should call the Serious Crime Unit on 299 4315, 299 4239 or confidential Crimestoppers hotline on 1800 623 8477.

The Royal Gazette <$>reported last week how Police had interviewed more than 90 people over the murder. Mr. Gibbings’ father, Richard, also revealed that the number of officers working on the case had doubled.

He said that Police had contacted him since he raised concerns about the inquiry and said he felt a little better since they told him “there’s still a glimmer of hope that a breakthrough can be made.”
