father, Sir George Somers -- 383 years after he stepped ashore.

The plaque is to be placed close to the beach at Fort St. Catherine where the crew of the Sea Venture is said to have landed on July 28, 1609.

The Sea Venture had travelled from Plymouth and sprang a leak during a storm.

After four days and nights of bailing, land was sighted and the Sea Venture ran aground on the rocks of Bermuda.

Crew and colonists then abandoned the vessel and made their way ashore. Mayor of St. George's, the Wor. Henry Hayward said: "Right now, nothing signifies where they landed. But I think such an important historical point in Bermuda should be marked.

"In Plymouth there is a big plaque to say that Sir George Somers sailed from there. In this place, where he made a bigger impression, there is nothing.

"Hopefully by summer there will be an appropriate monument to Sir George Somers.'' Mr. Hayward has been discussing the siting of the plaque close to Fort St.

Catherine but in a place where it can be seen and appreciated by visitors.

The St. George's Rotary Club has now taken over the project and is working on the plaque and a suitable platform.
