Nine Lives used-clothes boutique seeks to fill market gap

Setting up: Nine Lives in Devonshire is a new second-hand boutique.

A chic boutique has opened at Kaleidoscope Art Gallery — the only catch is all of the clothes are used.

The second-hand store Nine Lives opened a week ago and its owners hope to offer professional women a chance to buy stylish, high quality clothes on the cheap.

Nine Lives is the brainchild of three young Bermudian women who work in different fields but all love to shop.

Twenty-four-year-old Sam Chandler is a teacher, while Alicia Wanklyn who is also 24 is an artist. And Leah Kempe, 25, works in international business.

Ms Kempe said: "We are very excited as we think we have found a gap in the market place. In our view, a competitively priced, quality clothing store does not exist in Bermuda."

And Ms Wanklyn said their shop at the Kaleidoscope Gallery was only the beginning: "We have plans to expand this concept in a number of innovative ways. We are hoping to generate awareness of the three R's, reduce, re-use and recycle."

The store is open every Saturday, from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Kaleidoscope Arts Foundation, on the corner of Jubilee Road in Devonshire.

Anyone wanting to drop off clothing and accessories they no longer want can do so during that period as well. Donations will not be accepted at any other time.

Ms Chandler said: "We will be donating a portion of our profits to The Kaleidoscope Arts Foundations, which we hope will help, and support Bermuda's art culture."
