Cyclists impress in UK

Two of Bermuda?s top female athletes both enjoyed superb performances at separate events in England over the weekend.

Triathlete Flora Duffy came home first in her competition while cyclist Julia Hawley powered to fifth place in one of the country?s leading women?s road races.

Kelly College student Duffy made her mark in the Eton SuperSprints Triathlon where she led from start to finish.

The former Front Street Mile champion and schools? record holder was first out of the water by nine seconds in a time of 11 minutes 39 seconds, and then had the second fastest time on the bike, 33 minutes and 43 seconds.

Duffy then galloped to the finish line with a run of 20 minutes and 11 seconds, also the second fastest in the field, to win in a time of one hour, five minutes and 25 seconds ? 46 seconds ahead of second-placed Lynn O?Neill.

The event attracted triathletes from all parts of Britain, including the powerful Manchester Tri Club, the Tri Club of Preston and the Brighton Phoenix Club.

Meanwhile, Hawley, returning to competition after a lengthy break, made her mark at the Mendip Hills Women?s Road Race in the west of England, an event which attracted several leading cyclists from around the country.

On a gruelling, hilly course which included one climb of some four miles, Hawley remained with the lead pack throughout, eventually crossing the line in fifth, just seconds behind winner Emma Silversides of the Leisure Lakes club.

Nina Davies of the Ogmore Valley Wheelers placed second and Toyota rider Brigitt Hollman third.
