Premier defends Governor's role
after a pro-Independence group this week threatened to demonstrate when the new representative of the Queen arrives.
The Committee for the Independence of Bermuda has said it will not be giving Lord Waddington a warm welcome when he arrives next Tuesday.
The Committee is planning to protest his arrival and will meet on Thursday night to decide how. It also called for the appointment of a Bermudian Governor.
But Premier the the Hon. Sir John Swan said: "Lord Waddington is coming because we have chosen to maintain our constitution as is.'' He said he recognised people have a right to freedom of expression, but hopes the rest of Bermuda will welcome the new Governor.
Acting Governor Mr. John Kelly said he did not think it appropriate for him to comment on the committee's planned protest.
But he did say he had outlined the Governor's "many'' responsibilities in a recent speech to Sandys Rotarians.
And he said if Bermuda becomes independent, someone will have to perform those duties.
PENISTON TO PAY SENATOR $22,000 CTS Peniston to pay senator $22,000 The Supreme Court has ordered controversial businessman Mr. Llewellyn Peniston to pay more than $22,000 to Youth and Sports Minister Sen. the Hon. Pamela Gordon.
The order was made late last month after Sen. Gordon filed a writ against Mr.
Peniston, a former Senator and Sen. Gordon's running mate in the 1989 election, for $25,000. The court ordered the businessman to pay $22,160.15.
The suit was to recover money loaned to Mr. Peniston by Sen. Gordon.
MAN DENIES UCK CHARGE CTS Man denies uck charge A man accused of sexually assaulting a girl aged under 14 pleaded not guilty in Magistrates' Court yesterday.
The 18-year-old was charged with unlawful carnal knowledge and unlawful and indecent assault of a female relative between November 1, 1985 and October 3, 1991.
The Wor. John Judge set bail at $5,000 with the condition the defendant have no contact with the girl. The case returns for mention on September 14.
MAN INJURED IN JEEP COLLISION AC Man injured in jeep collision A man who was hit by a jeep in front of the Swinging Doors bar on Court Street was released from King Edward VII Memorial Hospital yesterday after remaining there for observation.
And Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward about the incident, which occurred at 11 p.m.on Saturday.
The 25-year-old Pembroke man suffered head and rib injuries and was taken to hospital shortly after the accident.
Police said the jeep was driven by a 22-year old Pembroke woman.
FIREFIGHTERS PROBE PINK BEACH BLAZE FIR Firefighters probe Pink Beach blaze Fire officials on Sunday launched an investigation into a structural fire at Pink Beach Club and Cottage Colony in Smith's Parish.
Twelve firemen and four appliances rushed to the fire, which was confined to a pump room, around 1.45 on Sunday afternoon, a fire spokesman said.
Only minor damage was reported.
Last night, the Fire Services said officials were still investigating the blaze in conjunction with Bermuda Gas Company.
THIEF STEALS $350 FROM PARKED CAR CRM Thief steals $350 from parked car Police have issued a warning to car owners to secure their vehicles when they leave them parked following a spate of thefts.
One of the latest occurred on Saturday evening when $350 was stolen from a parked car on Court Street.
Police have also asked people to move their belongings out of view when they park their cars.
