Urgent meeting for drink servers
An urgent call is being made to all bartenders, waiting staff and drink servers to attend a meeting tomorrow to discuss solutions to the issue of drink driving on the Island.
The meeting in the City Hall Theatre is expected to last for around one hour starting at 9.30 a.m, and Premier Ewart Brown said he is also encouraging employers to release part-time bartenders and servers to allow them to attend.
"Road safety is a personal and collective responsibility. This is a vitally important meeting designed to raise awareness with regard to steps that can be taken to reduce the unnecessary loss of life and ensure safety on our roads," said Dr. Brown, who is also Transport Minister.
"The management of Bermuda's restaurants, night clubs and social clubs are encouraged to work with us to ensure that all bartenders and servers are in attendance."
The Bermuda Road Safety Council and CADA (Centre for Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention) are backing the meeting.
Dr. Christopher Johnson, chairman of the Road Safety Council, said: "We are pleased that the Chamber of Commerce, the Bermuda Hotel Association and the Bermuda Football Association have all pledged their commitment to assist in securing the support of their members to ensure that as many bartenders and servers are present at this all important meeting.
"Our goal is to build awareness and enlist the support of these folks in the battle to save lives on Bermuda's roads. We are not asking them to stop selling and serving, but rather to assist with ensuring their patrons safety if they have been drinking."
