Prospect tenants warned: Clean up your act or get out

More tenants whose wayward children are terrorising neighbours in the Alexandra Road, Prospect, area could be evicted if they don't get a grip on their offspring, Bermuda Housing Corporation has warned.

Residents have been subjected to obstruction, verbal abuse and noise from troublemakers while drug deals have also been seen in the area.

BHC deputy chairman David Burch said one family has been evicted as a result of misbehaviour and more could follow.

"We are continuing to experience irresponsible behaviour from some young adults at Alexandra Road," he said. "The BHC will not tolerate this behaviour ? some of it illegal ? and we will continue to work with Police to address this area of concern.

"Those tenants whose sons are a part of the problem need to intervene to get them to modify their behaviour."

He said upgrading work ? including fixing lighting and sewage and fixing roads ? gave residents hope that action will be taken.

"Hopefully this will generate a renewed spirit in their community, where they not only police themselves but won't be reluctant to provide information to the Police so they can do their job and prosecute some of the culprits."

External trenching at Prospect has been completed and the road paving is well underway. Once the new lightening, sewage and paving have been completed the Board will revisit the proposal for the building of additional units at Prospect, said Lt. Col. Burch.

The Alexandra Road and Mary Victoria Road community banded together on Saturday morning for a clean-up, partnering with Government, Keep Bermuda Beautiful and Police.

A family fun day with a barbecue and raffle followed.

The project was initiated by Police Devonshire Community Beat Officer P.c. Krishan Singh and community activist Hilary Soares along with the Prospect Action Group.

It is part of a crime reduction strategy and community morale improvement programme developed by the Police Crime Prevention Unit.
