Woman beaten in nightclub

A Devonshire teenager suffered a bruised nose, a split upper lip and two black eyes after getting into a fight at Level Nightclub in Hamilton.

According to Police, at 1.45 a.m. Friday morning, the 19-year-old, who has not been identified, went into the bathroom at the club and saw her friend arguing with three females.

She tried to intervene and was shoved in the back by one of the females and the two others started to punch her in the face.

Though she fought back, the Devonshire woman was knocked to the ground and, when the management at the nightclub threw them out of the club, the fight continued on Front Street.

The 19-year-old suffered two black eyes, a bruised nose, scratches on her neck, a split lip, swelling on the left side of her face and an open wound on the arch of her left foot before her family broke-up the fight and the three girls fled.

Jerome Overbey, an owner of the nightclub, said he was serving drinks behind the bar when he was told some girls were fighting in the bathroom.

After failing to convince the girls to calm down, Mr. Overbey escorted them out of Level and called the Police. When Police arrived the fight was over and those involved had left the premises.

According to Mr. Overbey it was a pretty abnormal incident for his bar and was disappointed that the clubgoers did not act more rationally.

He said: "We are sorry it happened in our establishment, but these things happen in bars all more than the world.

"We did everything to keep the parties separated, but they decided to keep going at it. We did everything to protect the establishment and to protect the girls. I was trying to convince the girls to calm down, but they wouldn't."

Police said they are continuing to investigate and asked that anyone with information to contact Central CIU on 295-0011.
