Super sub Dill saves Red Devils
North Village twice came from behind to equalise -- the second a dramatic 89th minute goal -- allowing for a share of the spoils from their First Division encounter with Devonshire Colts at Bernard Park yesterday.
Substitute Kaiwon Dill achieved instant hero status as it was his strike in the dying stages that saved the home side's blushes.
Dill had a few moments earlier entered the fray as a replacement for Village captain Damon Wade, who hobbled off with a damaged left ankle after getting sandwiched between two Colts players.
Winning a right wing corner, Sheldon Franks curled an in-swinging cross into the six-yard area and as three defenders failed to clear, Dill willingly obliged by slamming home a volley into the left corner past an anchored Randy Darrell in goal.
Earlier Colts showed that they had put the ghosts of an opening day loss to Somerset Eagles behind them with what must rank as one of the fastest goals on record.
Scant 49 seconds had elapsed when Colts stunned their opponents with a score from the boot of Ellington Weldon.
Direct from the kick-off Jahmah Samuels was allowed free rein to dribble along the right flank and send in a waist-high cross that out of form goal-keeper Dwayne Adams failed to advance toward, paying the price when Weldon nipped in front to nudge the ball over the line.
Colts' front-runners Weldon and Sullivan Phillips were a danger every time they touched the ball and received adequate support from midfielders Mark Ray, Jason Smith and Jahmah Samuels.
Likewise Village's Wade, Franks, Nakia Smith, and Michael Hansey proved a handful in the middle of the park, controlling tempo while full-backs Kevin Grant and Wayne Augustus troubled opponents with several overlapping forays.
Weldon should have had a second goal in the 23rd minute when he found himself in possession eight yards from goal and with only Adams standing in the way of a two goal advantage. However, the diminutive striker mysteriously found a way to sky his effort over the cross-bar.
He would come to rue the missed chance when Wade equalised in the 39th minute, rising high to power home a header after Sean Dill had nodded Grant's searching cross from the right across the goalmouth.
Colts restored the one-goal advantage seven minutes following the interval when a glaring blunder by Wayne Augustus presented Mark Ray an opportunity he gleefully accepted.
Attempting to play the ball out from defence Augustus watched in horror as his intended back pass was intercepted by Ray on the edge of the penalty area and slammed past Adams to rest in the low left corner.
However, this merely set the stage for Dill's late heroics.
