Greenrock says: A wish list for a Greener 2012
Wish for more sustainable Bermuda in 2012In the spirit of the upcoming holidays, our volunteer Management Committee got into a festive mood and put forward their wishes for a more sustainable Bermuda in 2012 ones which are attainable and support our community in leading happier, healthier and more sustainable lives.Greenrock firmly believes that adopting sustainable practices and protecting our natural surroundings can help businesses and individuals save money, as well as keep our limited spaces and natural surroundings pristine for all Bermudians and visitors alike in the future. Our 2012 wish list is this:· Take pleasure in the things we have now and not throw away what we have to get the next new thing.· Enjoy locally-grown produce during all the Christmas festivities and all year round.· Greenrock’s Hydration Stations pilot project in the City of Hamilton will encourage more people to carry their own reusable bottle and make a marked difference in reducing our Island’s plastic waste, especially single-use bottled water.· The inevitable upcoming election will generate a vibrant debate on environmental policy and the direction in which Bermuda will move, both to protect our fragile Island, as well as the future of our environment.· Car retailers and customers will be provided incentives to buy electric vehicles, such as reduced tariffs and registration and licensing fees.· Work with Government to implement a “glass bottle” deposit policy that would include but not be limited to beer, spirits and wine bottles.· Lobby Government to better inform public of the progress of the Tynes Bay infrastructure project in particular, Morgan’s Point what the plan is and the schedule to clean up this area.· Introduce and persuade local retailers and Government to implement a plastic shopping bag ban, reducing trash and protecting our oceans.· More Bermuda residents will recycle, which will encourage Government to increase awareness surrounding our “TAG” programme.· Government and the Alliance for the Sargasso Sea will introduce a Marine Protection Area for the Sargasso Sea the amazing and unique heritage right on our doorstep.· Expand on our Green Workplace Awards entering its second year to include a category for youth and schools.· Bermuda will get serious about resource conservation and energy management to show the world that we lead the way in reducing our carbon emissions.· Creation of bicycle lanes for residents who wish to ride along them for commuting and for pleasure.· Enjoy our beautiful Island with our children the best presents anyone could wish for!***If you are interested in helping Greenrock’s Management Committee to achieve any of the 2012 wishes for a more sustainable Bermuda, please email us at info[AT]greenrock.org.
