Seymour’s double sinks Zebras
Dev. Cougars 2 PHC 1Jesse Seymour struck twice as Devonshire Cougars started their league campaign off on a winning note last night at Devonshire Rec. with a hard-fought victory over PHC Zebras. The home side were looking the sharper side midway through the first half as they enjoyed the better of the possession but lacked the decisive ball around the edge of the penalty box. PHC made them pay when they broke the deadlock in the 37th minute when Ajai Grant scored past Kioshi Trott with a low shot at the near post. The goal immediately jolted Cougars and within two minutes they were level when Seymour notched the first of his two goals when he curled a freekick from on the right side of the penalty box into the far corner to beat Troy Hall in the PHC goal. The second half started with both teams searching for more goals and just eight minutes after the restart Cougars took the lead for the first time when PHC failed to clear from a corner on the left after Jevonne Sealey miskicked on the edge of the box and when the ball reached Seymour he produced a clinical piece of finishing, driving in a low shot from an angle on the right side of the box.The goal lifted Cougars who nearly doubled their lead soon after when Hall handled the ball outside his penalty box. Drewonde Bascome curled his freekick against the near post before PHC cleared the danger. At the other end Kenji Griffith tested Trott in the Cougars goal with a fierce drive as PHC stepped it up in search of the equaliser. And when the 17-year-old ‘keeper began to lose his composure after a couple of challenges unsettled him, PHC began to sense a weakness in the Cougars defence, though they were unable to find a second goal as Cougars hung on for their first victory of the season.Dev.
