Knock 'em out and then there's no doubt, Ali advises Perozzi

Champ meets champ: Bermuda’s boxing star Teresa Perozzi (left) meets undefeated boxer Laila Ali at the Celebrity Tennis Classic cocktail reception held at the Elbow Beach resort on Thursday evening.

Knock-out queen Laila Ali has advised Teresa Perozzi to learn to canvass opponents if she wants to prevent a reoccurrence of her controversial draw in Sweden.

Perozzi fell foul of a home decision in her recent bout against Asa Sandell, despite cracking the Swede's cheekbone and dominating the six-round fight.

Undefeated Ali is the most devastating 'finisher' in female boxing, signing off 21of her 24 fights with knock-out blows, refusing to leave decisions to the judges' jurisdiction.

She caught up with Perozzi at the Celebrity Tennis Classic launch party at Elbow Beach, and believes the Bermudian possesses the punching power to increase her knock-out ratio of one in nine.

"In this sport you need to be able to knock girls out," said the reigning super middleweight champion. "You can't afford to let judges make the decision especially when you're fighting abroad. I fought Asa Sandell in Berlin and put her down, that's what you have to do.

"I'm a very aggressive fighter and I've won most of my fights by knock-out, so I've not experienced the same problems as the likes of Teresa Perozzi.

"But I'm very experienced and I think Teresa has the power to knock out girls, she will learn."

The 29-year-old daughter of sporting legend Muhammad Ali is currently inactive, focusing on her post-fight career as a television personality and champion of healthy living.

But she has refused to rule out lacing up her gloves if she finds a challenger who sufficiently motivates her to climb back in the ring. She knocked-out Gwendolyn O'Neil in her last fight in February and has been linked with a match against undefeated Russian Natascha Ragosina. It is understood Ragosina's camp are currently in talks regarding a possible bout with Perozzi who impressed promoters during her brutal display against Sandell early this month.

"I'm not active as I'm currently taking time off from boxing," said Ali. "I'm concentrating on my post-boxing career promoting health, fitness and general wellness.

"There's plenty of fights left in me but I can't find one that motivates me. It's hard for average female boxers to get fights but there's always girls who want to fight me, but I don't find any of them challenging.

"Natascha Ragosina is maybe someone I would go for. I offered her a fight a few years ago but she said she wasn't ready for me."

So can Ali ever envisage a fight against Bermuda's number one Perozzi?

"Teresa knows better than that," Ali smiled. "She is my friend and I'm a lot more experienced and on a different level. Besides, I'm not really thinking about boxing at the moment, I've other projects I'm working on."

Ali is in Bermuda with her husband and ex-NFL star Curtis Conway. The couple, who tied the knot in July, are supporting the Celebrity Tennis Classic and will be in action today at the WER Joell Tennis Stadium.

The annual Classic raises money for the Bermuda Lawn Tennis Association's junior programme to send some of the Island's best young talents to overseas tournaments.

"I'm a big supporter of the Celebrity Tennis Classic with this my third year in Bermuda," added Ali. "It's for a great cause as some of the most talented athletes can't always afford to take their career further.

"All I have to do is come here and enjoy myself playing tennis, although I'm not that good, and it gives young players the chance to earn a scholarship."
