Town emerge from scrappy affair

Those appearing for this FA Cup tie at BAA field yesterday hoping to see a demonstration of the style and grace often associated with the game of soccer were certainly disappointed...this was ugly.

Wayward passes, missed opportunities and bickering fuelled by frustration for Town and inability by the home side to mount anything in the form of an attack did little to distinguish the tie, which had the former triumph 2-0.

"I can't watch this,'' cried one fan, while another asked, "Is this football or what?'' It was hard to tell...even for the well trained eye! While, as expected, visitors Dandy Town dominated obviously inferior opponents their general ineptitude around goal once again came to the fore and it took two late second-half strikes from substitute Darren Simons to seal them a place in the quarter-finals.

After replacing an out-of-touch Troy Lewis midway through the second half Simons first flashed behind the BAA defence in the 83rd minute to head a long cross from the hard-working Paul Cann past goalkeeper Philip Bolton.

Bolton had been flawless to that point despite mounting pressure. However, he would concede a second goal seconds before the final whistle when Simons slotted the ball home from an acute angle on the left following a right-wing corner by Walter Musson.

"I've finally found a place for him,'' said a relieved Town coach Mark Trott of his newly discovered hero. "It seems like when he comes off the bench he always looks dangerous.'' From the outset the Green Knights appeared in danger of being swept off the pitch as the Hornets continually swarmed about the home side's penalty area and only resolute defending by ageless centre-back Frank Brewster and his supporting cast prevented a goal rush.

Brewster seemed to be everywhere, with his big boot often BAA's lone saving grace.

Town's forward line of Kris Martin, Carlos Smith and Musson all felt the brunt of crunching tackles from the wily veteran, something that appeared to inspire the rest of the team.

Still, Bolton, unlike counterpart Cymande Davis, had much work between the sticks, successfully thwarting goal-bound efforts from Smith, Martin, Musson and Cann in the opening half.

A similar scenario unfurled after the interval, however, the rearguard slowly began to weaken under unrelenting pressure from Town and in the end a just result was achieved.
