Samuels hat-trick sinks St.George's

Teenage substitute Jahmel Samuels became the third player to score a hat-trick against the hapless St.George's defence in two games when his goals helped Boulevard advance to the semi-finals of the Martonmere Cup last night at PHC Stadium.

Samuels, who came into the game in the 32nd minute when Donnie Charles limped off, put the match beyond doubt with the second, third and fourth goals in the space of 16 minutes late in the game.

The third goal came in the 90th minute as the 18-year-old son of former player Oscar Samuels left it late in completing his first hat-trick in the First Division.

"It was a good hat-trick, I thought I would only get two,'' said the unassuming Samuels afterwards.

"The strikers need to work a little harder, but they'll be alright by the end of the season.'' St. George's, coming off a 7-0 hammering at the hands of champions Vasco last week, held their own during the first half.

Boulevard were either denied by poor finishing or some outstanding saves by goalkeeper Rodney Burchall, which started as early as the fourth minute when he dived to his right to make a good stop from a Neil Robinson free kick inside the box.

The match was halted for 10 minutes early in the first half when the lights failed but an electrician quickly found the problem -- the main switch had been turned off! Both teams made changes in the first half because of injuries, with Melvin Simmons replacing Jade Minors and Samuels coming on for Charles three minutes later.

Striker Kenny Hill broke the deadlock in the 53rd minute when he followed up a header which was blocked on the goal-line to scramble the ball home.

St. George's then responded by forcing three straight corners, but when they failed to equalise, Samuels pounced to settle the match.

His first goal came in the 74th minute when a long range shot from captain Neil Robinson was parried by the diving Burchall and before the ball was cleared the youngster scored at the near post.

Samuels' second in the 81st minute was the best goal of his young career, receiving a pass on the edge of the box with acres of space and getting the ball under control before smashing a shot in off the underside of the bar.

With just seconds remaining, he completed his treble turning in the box and shooting into the far corner.
