Urban Ned Fleming admitted in Magistrates' Court to stealing the food from the Supermart on Front Street and obstructing a Police officer who tried to arrest him.

Fleming was also charged with possession of drug equipment. He was fined a total of $500.

Sgt. Rex Osborne, prosecuting, told the court on Tuesday that on October 25 at 8 p.m. Police saw Fleming talking to a person in an alley off of Elliott Street in Pembroke.

"Officers saw Fleming accepting an object and when he saw them he ran in the direction of Elliott Street passing the officers,'' Sgt. Osborne said.

While running Fleming threw an object away that proved to be a homemade pipe that later was found to contain traces of cocaine.

Fleming "struggled violently'' in resisting arrest.

Sgt. Osborne also told the court that Fleming was spotted on June 27 in The Supermart at the produce shelf.

"The store manager noticed that Fleming was acting suspiciously,'' he said.

"(Fleming) put a few items into his pocket and left the store.

Sgt. Osborne said Police arrived and found Fleming hiding in Fagans Alley near the store's service entrance.

After searching Fleming, Police found a carrot and some cheese in his pockets and some crab salad nearby.

When asked why he stole the food Fleming replied: "I was hungry.'' Senior Magistrate the Wor. Will Francis fined Fleming $200 for the drug equipment, $200 for obstruction and $100 for shoplifting.
