Emotional teachers produce the goods
A terrier-like pack combined with the best display by the Teachers' backs this season paved the way to their biggest win in the eight years of the Denton Memorial Trophy played at National Sports Club yesterday.
The Teachers `red tide' opened several gaps in The Rest's backs with Alvin Harvey having his best game for Teachers, notching two superb tries.
However, mistakes made in the first 10 minutes could have been costly when Harvey decided to run three of four penalties instead of kicking the points.
It was all Teachers in the first half with constant possession from set plays and tenacious tackling by Scott Correia and Michael Montgomery.
Teachers' rucking was outstanding and provided the exuberant Andrew Correia with constant, quick second-phase ball.
The Rest, being starved of possession, came back well in the second half and Gary Osborne must be congratulated for running the ball with the limited possession that he had.
Harvey's best try came after a Montgomery switch that opened up huge gaps in the defence.
A long pass to Sal Cantarella resulted in Harvey taking the last pass for a great try.
For the Rest, Jonah Jones did a lot of spoiling but was frequently penalised for killing the ball.
Heath Robinson and Andre Simons also scored good tries after great support from the forwards, in particular Ashley Redmond and Anthony Cupidor.
The Rest scored a consolation try in the dying minutes through Danny Soares.
RESPECT -- Teachers players, from left, Anthony Cupidor, captain Alvin Harvey, Andre Simons, Tim White and Billy McNiven are pictured during a minute's silence for the late Denton Hurdle before yesterday's match.
BATTLING AGAINST ODDS -- The Rest's Barry Whitehead is surrounded by Teachers players in first-half action yesterday. Teachers dominated the proceedings and won 25-5.
