Bermuda rally to defeat Barbados
Squash Tournament at the Devonshire courts yesterday when they whitewashed Barbados 5-0.
Bermuda's Under 12 champion Nick Kyme set the standard for the home team by defeating Sam Taylor in straight games 9-1, 9-4, 9-2. Playing to a good length, Kyme kept his opponent pinned at the back of the court, using his backhand to great effect.
The next match was a much closer affair with Marco Bortoli falling behind in the first game against his Under 14 opponent Bryn Palmer, before gradually easing ahead to take it 9-6.
Palmer raced to a 6-0 lead in the second game, but despite facing a game ball at 8-5, Bortoli again fought back to triumph 10-8. He had an easier time of it in the third game which he won 9-2.
With Bermuda needing three wins for victory, Under 16 champion Tommy Sherratt made light of the task by despatching Ryan Truss for the loss of just two points 9-1, 9-1, 9-0.
Bermuda's James Hubbard started nervously against his Under 19 opponent Randy Clarke but recovered to win 9-6, 9-3, 9-3. Clarke, who now lives in Barbados, previously represented Bermuda in junior squash.
And finally it was Mel Caines who was left to protect Bermuda's unbeaten record. After dropping the first game to Barbados Dean Serrao 2-9, he picked up the pace to rattle off the next three 9-4, 9-7, 9-6 against a tiring opponent.
Bermuda's girls were not as successful, going down 3-0 to Barbados. Nicola Swain survived four match points in the third game against Barbados' Carla Jackson but finally succumbed to the inevitable in game four, going down 6-9, 4-9, 10-9, 9-10.
Ashlea Johansen lost in straight games to Sarah Moorjani while Carolyn Young suffered a similar fate against the Caribbean number two Andrea Goodridge.
In yesterday's other encounter, Guyana triumphed 2-1 over Cayman Islands in the girls competition, and 3-2 in the boys competition. It was a close-fought battle with everything resting on the final match.
TOMMY SHERRATT -- Conceded only two points on his way to victory.
