who assaulted another man earlier this month.

Laurie Burrows, 25, of Devon Springs Lane, Devonshire, this week faced seven charges stemming from two separate incidents.

Burrows, a self-employed mechanic, pleaded guilty to using offensive words on March 20 on Devon Springs Road, and using threatening words on the same date.

But he pleaded not guilty to violently resisting a woman Police officer who tried to arrest him and assaulting her.

Burrows also pleaded guilty to assaulting Michael Tucker, having an offensive weapon, and using threatening behaviour on March 7.

Police prosecutor Sgt. Phil Taylor told Senior Magistrate Will Francis that Tucker had gone to a Reid Street nightclub after 2.30 a.m. on that day and drank wine by himself.

Some time after Tucker's arrival, Burrows began to shout across the bar: "I don't like faggots,'' and then started swearing.

After more verbal abuse, Tucker went to the restroom "in hopes of defusing the situation'' Sgt. Taylor said.

Burrows confronted the Tucker in the bar after 5.30 a.m., screamed abuse at him again and punched him in the face. Tucker hit Burrows about the head with a wine glass.

Burrows -- naked from the waist up -- approached Tucker outside the club armed with a knife, telling him: "I'm going to slit your throat.'' Tucker was able to get the knife away and present it to the Police when they arrived.

Police found Burrows bleeding, with a blood-covered shirt outside the club at 5.45 a.m.

Duty counsel Julianna Jack told Mr. Francis that Burrows did not know Tucker, and it was a case of "being under the influence''.

"He wants to apologise and take responsibility for his actions,'' Mrs. Jack said.

Mr. Francis ordered Burrows to reappear on May 6 for the reading of a social inquiry report.

He also set a trial date for the March 20 offences on July 20.

Burrows was ordered to pay $500 bail for each group of charges, each with a surety in a like amount.
