Cleveland veterans foil Stars’ bid for promotion

Cleveland, 136, defeated Western Stars, 107, by 29 runsVeterans Peter Philpott and Aaron Adams used all their experience to ensure Cleveland County will play Premier Division cricket next season. The pair shared in a century partnership for the fourth wicket as Cleveland posted a meagre 136 in 33 overs in the promotion/playoff match at Sea Breeze Oval yesterday. Then, when First Division side Western Stars threatened to seal victory that would finally take them back into the Premier Divison, the 44-year-old Philpott claimed three wickets for 17 runs in 7.4 overs to wrap up a 29-run win for the Premier Division side.Stars’ resistance was finally broken when, after a third wicket stand of 44 between Nyon Steede (9) and McLaren Lowe (28), Cleveland claimed three wickets for three runs as Stars slumped to 59 for six as Philpott removed Steede and then trapped Rohan Davis lbw. With captain Brian Hall batting comfortably at one end, Stars moved on to to 88 for seven when Wayne Campbell was bowled by a Shaki Darrell yorker for 12.Stars’ last hopes of victory dissipated in two balls when, first, Seth Campbell was run out after ‘backing up’ too far as bowler Dennis Musson was about to deliver. The dismissal is one of the most contentious in cricket, but legal nonetheless, and after verifying with the Cleveland captain (Musson) that he wanted the appeal to stand, umpire Hector Watson had no option but to give Campbell out.On the next ball Musson bowled Hall for 28 as Stars slumped to 100 for nine, and in the next over Peter Philpott completed a fine all-round performance when he bowled Raymond Burgess to give Cleveland the victory.Allan Douglas, who took the new ball, bowled only two overs and had a wicket in each over as Audley Campbell and Temiko Wilson were dismissed with only eight runs on the board after three overs.Douglas went off ‘injured’, later playing and scoring for St. George’s Colts in a football match at BAA Field. Also taking two wickets was Musson who had two for 26 from eight overs while Douglas had figures of two for nine.Earlier, Philpott hit 64 from 76 balls with 11 fours while another forty-something, Aaron Adams (49), weighed in with 46 from 51 balls with three sixes and four fours. They came together on 26 for three and added 100 for the fourth wicket, although the Cleveland innings quickly fell apart after that as the last six wickets went down for just 10 runs as Stars fought back to put themselves in a strong position.Seth Campbell and Jason Lowe, who shared the new ball, both claimed their three wickets in their second spell while Brian Hall also took two wickets in his second spell as Cleveland suffered a total collapse.Campbell finished with three for 23 from seven overs while Lowe claimed three for 28 from 10 overs, Nyon Steede two for 24 from five and Hall two for 31 from seven as no other Cleveland batsman reached double figures. Cleveland also called on veteran Carlton Smith as Treadwell Gibbons jr opted to play football with Dandy Town.“They told me I had to open so I said I would just play it because I hadn’t been training,” said Philpott who was playing in only his second match of the season. “I just watched the ball and played straight as long as possible. Experience came in, I saw wickets were falling so I had to stick in. I got out on 128 and was just trying to hang in there as long as possible.”And the left-armer also used his experience to take three crucial wickets.“As I bowled I got into a rhythm and got more comfortable,” he stated. “I starting moving the ball around and working out the batsmen. One thing I must admit was the skipper had a never-say-die attitude and when he was bowling they couldn’t get him or me away. He picked up two wickets and I got the last one.“It was through him inspiring the team that got us over the last hurdle, basically. He never thought 136 runs was not going to be enough, it wasn’t an easy wicket to play on.”
