when Eddy Hellebuyck pulled away from the pack to win yesterday's ADT Bermuda Marathon.

"I knew when we were halfway that he was the guy to beat,'' former champion Robert Yara said after the race. "Plus, he beat me before in a marathon.'' Said Bagley, who finished third and a notch above Yara: "I actually keyed off him right from the start. I was just going to stay with Eddy because I knew that he knew what he was doing. You just knew he was sitting back there comfortable, never wanting to take the lead until the end and then, boom, he was right there.'' But Irina Souvorova, translator for second-place finisher Juri Kazmin was not so sure.

"He (Kazmin) was going to be first, but it was so windy.'' * * * Bagley rated as the coolest competitor of the marathon with his ever-present sunglasses on but it was Canadian Walter Faion, the sixth-place finisher in 2:42:08 who was easily the most exuberant.

Faion -- who did not run in the 10-K -- ran alongside eventual winner Michal Bartoszak when the Polish native reached National Stadium on Saturday morning.

Faion jumped up and down to celebrate Bartoszak's triumph and his mood stayed the same when he shook hands with anyone in sight after yesterday's marathon.

"The people along the course, the people of Bermuda...they're just so great. You can't quit this race, even if you're ready to die.'' * * * Based on information provided by International Race Weekend organisers, it was incorrectly reported on Saturday that Tyler Butterfield had smashed the record his brother, Spencer, had set a year earlier in the Primary Boys mile race.

Tyler, who finished in first place, actually ran the mile in 5:30, not 5:03.2 as reported, 15 seconds shy of the record. Also, Velvet Smith was a record-breaker in the Primary Girls race in 5:58.1, besting the previous mark held by Suella Matthews of 5:58.2. * * * A blunder by race announcers during the Bank of Butterfield Elite Mile created a stir with Paul Freary.

The Englishman was first acknowledged as placing third behind Michal Bartoszak and Viacheslav Shabounin, when he was in fact second -- officially.

* * * It was a second-place weekend for Laura Mykytok of the US as the Florida native finished number two among women in the 10-K and marathon. Mykytok has returned to the running scene full-time after taking a couple of years off because of university studies.

"But I had become so disillusioned with what I was doing in college so I decided just to concentrate on running for a while. I mean, I tried to balance the two and it just doesn't work for me.'' * * * Following his victory on Saturday, Michal Bartoszak was told that he looked fresh enough to run another 10-K race. "No, I need rest now,'' he said, smiling. So what did he do? He ran along the National Stadium track for another half-hour.
