Rev. Wendell Foster plans return to Vernon Temple
Southampton, to take part in its 66th anniversary next week.
The former pastor, who is now a councilman for the city of New York and pastor of Christ Church, United Church of Christ, in the Bronx area of New York, will be the guest of honour at Vernon Temple's Fellowship Celebration Buffet Supper, next Friday, September 11. He will also be the guest speaker at anniversary services to be held at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Sunday, September 13.
Rev. Foster became the first salaried pastor at Vernon Temple when he arrived here from the US in 1953.
He moved to St. Paul AME Church in 1956, and during his pastorship there, he married the fomer Miss Helen Somersall. They have two children, Rebekah Ann Joy and Helen Diane.
During his time in Bermuda, Rev. Foster was instrumental in assisting young Bermudians to obtain scholaships at several black educational institutions, notably Wilberforce University.
Some of those who were to benefit include Progressive Labour Party MPs Mr.
Stanley Lowe and Mr. Reginald Burrows and Senate Opposition Leader Alex Scott.
Since 1966, Rev. Foster has been a council member for the 9th district, Bronx New York City, where he chairs the International Intergroup Relations and Special Events Committee and is a member of the Finance, Education, Rules, Parks and Recreation Committees.
He is also the founder and president of the United Black Church Appeal foundation, and a member of the World Peace Council.
