Carifta bound DeRosa shines with personal best at NSC
Tiara DeRosa continued her meteoric ascent in track and field during the weekend’s Bermuda National Athletic Association (BNAA) meet at the National Sports Centre (NSC).The promising athlete set a new personal best in the Under-17 girls shot put and also met the Carifta Games ‘A’ qualifying standard in the Under-17 girls discus.DeRosa produced a hurl of 11.06 metres in the shot put on Saturday which surpassed the 10.33 metres she achieved at the same venue last month.She also met the Carifta ‘A’ standard in the discus with a superb throw of 31.22 metres to further underline her potential and cap another memorable weekend of competition.“Tiara is really doing fantastic and I am very pleased with her,” said BNAA president Donna Watson.DeRosa has come on in leaps and bounds since performing under the wing of throwing coach and past Carifta great Sonya Smith.“Since she’s been training with Sonya every week she is throwing further and further,” Watson said. “They have a good relationship and it’s very important that an athlete has the confidence in their coach.”Smith currently holds the national record of 13.59 metres in the women’s shot put that she set in Los Angeles in 1985.Meanwhile, others reaching Carifta qualifying standard at the weekend were Kyrah Scraders, Michaiah Robinson and Bruce DeGrilla.Scraders, who won a silver medal in the Under-17 girls 1500 metres at last year’s Games in Bermuda, reached the ‘A’ standard in the Under-17 girls 800 metres. She has also met the Games’ ‘A’ qualifying standard in the Under-17 girls 1500 metres.Robinson met the ‘B’ qualifying standard in the Under-17 boys 800 metres while DeGrilla met the ‘B standard in the Under-20 boys long jump.So far ten athletes have met the Carifta qualifying standard and Watson expects that number to increase during the upcoming weeks.“We are hoping to have at least 20 athletes travelling to Bahamas to the Games,” she said. “We still have our athletes overseas who are just beginning their indoor season and we have no doubt they will reach the Carifta standard.”Other athletes to have met Carifta standard include Sakari Famous, Kerri Furbert, Quaashie Douglas, Antonio Bailey, Chas Smith and Quinn Simmons.Famous achieved the Games’ ‘A’ standard in the Under-17 girls high jump with a personal best leap of 1.64 metres which would have earned her the gold medal at the previous Carifta Games while Furbert met the ‘A’ standard in the Under-20 girls long jump with a personal best leap of 5.76 metres.Douglas met the ‘B’ standard in the Under-17 girls 1500 metres while Bailey achieved the ‘B’ standard in the Under-17 boys 400 metres.Smith has met the ‘B’ standard in the Under-20 boys high jump while Simmons has achieved the ‘B’ standard in the Under-20 boys discus.This year’s Carifta Games will be held in Nassau, Bahamas from March 28 to April 1.
