'Carrying on the work of Pentecost'

Tomorrow, Catholics from around Bermuda will mark World Mission Sunday in their parishes, a day which Pope John Paul II says, "seeks to heighten awareness of the missions, as well as to collect funds for them, is an important date in the life of the church because it teaches how to give: as an offering made to God, in the Eucharistic celebration and for all the missions of the world."

One of the blessings of my job and also one of my personal priorities is to receive visiting missionaries from foreign lands. Such a visit affords the national office staff and myself a wonderful opportunity to meet missionaries first-hand.

Usually the visit has three parts: a private meeting with myself in which we discuss specifics of diocesan programmes, needs and projects; the celebration of the Eucharist with staff (which occurs at the national office daily) and a shared lunch.

Normally, most visiting bishops, as the celebrant of the Mass, offer a few words about their own diocese to help situate their mission activity. And generally, they are very profusive in offering thanks to us and to all the people of this country for our financial and prayerful support.

Recently, a bishop from Nigeria began his "reflection" after the Gospel by telling us: "I am here to affirm you in your faith. It is by faith that you do the wonderful works of the Pontifical Mission Societies." I never heard this sentiment expressed in such a manner. And yet it made perfect sense.

When we celebrate World Mission Sunday tomorrow, each one of us, as members of this global church, are affirmed in faith. After all, it is through the gift of faith that we carry on the work of Pentecost. It is by faith that we feel compelled to share Christ with others.

World Mission Sunday invites everyone in the world, rich and poor, to look beyond their own national borders, dioceses, parishes and homes - and to join in solidarity to proclaim Jesus as Lord and Saviour. You may not realise it, but everywhere in the world on that day Catholics are praying for the missionary needs of all and are offering their financial gifts in support of universal needs.

Yes, we affirm one another in our faith when we participate in World Mission Sunday. In these very challenging times, such affirmation is very needed and most appreciated. Share the enthusiasm and enjoy the affirmation. Be a significant participant in World Mission Sunday with your prayers and your generous gifts.
