Musical confronts `worldly issues with spiritual flavour'

A new musical production set for this weekend will be tackling "worldly issues with a spiritual flavour''.

"A Figure of Speech: Hallelujah'' is an original musical written by Gina Spence and choreographed by her daughter Greashena Spence.

More than 50 cast members will perform in this family-oriented musical that will address issues such as drug addiction, pack-racing and the difficulty of forgiveness.

The plot centres around four women representing four different generations of a family.

The great-grandmother in the production, played by Brendell Hall, is the character who attempts to bring the family together after painful circumstances have driven them apart.

Songstress Gita Blakeney plays a former drug addict who has re-dedicated her life to Christ after abandoning her daughter to the grandmother's care.

And the angry daughter -- who became a mother herself -- is played by newcomer Tiffany Outerbridge.

Gina Spence's younger daughter, Edwina Grant, will play the fourth generation in the family.

Although the show is primarily geared to illicit an emotional reaction -- Ms Spence said participants have broken down and cried during rehearsal -- the performance will have a fair share of comedy including one scene that parodies the David Lopes talk show. "This show is not just about having fun -- it's about changing people's lives,'' said Ms Spence.

The show will be performed tonight and tomorrow at 8 p.m. at St. Paul's Centennial Hall, Court Street, Hamilton.

Tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for children, $30 for patrons and can be purchased at Christian Bookstore, Music Box, and Ricky's Barber Shop. Part of the proceeds will aid the St. George's Parish Rest Home.
