ABOUT THE ARTIST - Daphne Stephenson

Daphne Stephenson has a wealth of experience in the art and design world, and is well known for her predominantly primitive naive style of art. She designed ties, scarves, belts, gift-wrapping paper, and was the only in-house designer and enameller for Halcyon Days in Bond Street, London.

She spent 16 years as an art teacher in both primary and secondary schools, and set up three art departments. Due to an increasing demand for commissions of her primitive naive work, she gave up teaching to become a full-time artist approximately seven years ago, since which she has exhibited at the Royal Academy; the Agora Gallery in Soho, New York; John Martin, London, the Festival of Naives in Verneuil France; and also a solo show in Langton Street, Chelsea.

Mrs. Stephenson is chairman of the Association of British Naives, and her largest collection, owned by Debby Brice, hangs in Nassau, Bahamas.

Recently, she developed a new range of art work to compliment her naive paintings. These are totally original, handmade, one-off pieces of 3D and installation art work, among them themed pieces from the Queen's Coronation adorning a pink drinks cabinet, and French metal busts dripping with old vintage objects and jewels. She loves inventing, creating and making 'art jewellery' for walls.

Her love affair with art continues with changing themes and styles, from collecting birds and aqua-blue glass, to ostrich feathers and mirrors, and old vintage pieces, which she loves to put together.
