Three-goal Correia ko's Parish
What goes around comes around! Second Division Hamilton Parish were reminded of that yesterday when, just a week after handing Wolves their first loss of the season, they were humbled by Commercial B team Mariners at White Hill Field in the day's biggest FA Cup upset.
A Mariners outfit made up mostly of former Port Royal players was clearly more pumped up for this match than Parish who ignored the wake-up call when Richard Correia shot the home team into a 21st minute lead with the first of his three goals.
Parish created the better of the chances before then but Mariners deserved the lead when Correia chipped the ball over the advancing Walter Brangman.
Mariners carried that lead into the half, though there was an incident in the 34th minute when Mariners midfielder Mark DeCoute was booked by Dennis Wainwright for what he and others thought was for the second time in the match.
This one, for handball, followed an earlier yellow card for encroaching on a Parish free kick. Even DeCoute thought he had got away with murder when the red card did not follow his handball booking. The team officials thought so too, and substituted him four minutes later.
However, referee Dennis Wainwright insisted there was no confusion at all, saying afterwards that John Frias (number 18) and not DeCoute (number 16) was booked in the first incident.
There was, however, no question as to which was the better team as Parish struggled against their more eager opponents. They fell further behind in the 61st minute when a ball knocked around on the edge of the Parish box was eventually lobbed by Correia into the roof of the net with Brangman off his line.
Parish pushed Chris Caisey into a more attacking role and Mariners capitalised with a third in the 73rd minute when a ball through the defence sent Correia clear on the right and he ran through to place his effort past the advancing Brangman.
Frustration got the better of Caisey as he was sent off in the 81st minute for foul language directed at his team-mates and Mariners added further gloom when Joe DeCosta added the fourth from close range after an unselfish pass from another sub, Gil Rodgrigues.
