North Rock to roll out WiMAX
North Rock Communications will be upgrading its current wireless offering to introduce high speed wireless technology this summer, along with a a new pricing structure for their current wireless service.
North Rock will be officially launching its WiMAX product, tentatively named North Rock Max, in a phased approach, while still offering service over its current Wireless network.
The upgrade will allow for higher speeds and better reach across the Island. As with the current generation platform North Rock Max will offer both Internet access and a telephone line with unlimited local calling.
"WiMAX is the next big step for wireless Internet access. Over the next few years you will start to see WiMAX replace WiFi as the wireless standard of choice," general manager of North Rock Communications, Vicki Coelho said.
Mrs. Coelho said the new offering, solidifies Bermuda's position as a leader in technology and innovation.
"Bermuda joins cities such as Toronto and Hong Kong as early adopters of the new WiMAX standard and North Rock is excited to be at the forefront of this new technology," she said.
Pricing for the new offering will be announced when the new service comes online in July.
North Rock Communications began offering their original fixed wireless to the corporate marketplace in January, 2000, with residential wireless service coming on line in June, 2002.
In September, 2004 North Rock became the only alternative to the incumbent telephone company BTC by offering a local phone line.
"We have had great success with our current wireless product which has been providing high speed Internet for more than six years," she added.
